CoolPapa & Brendan
Here's a recap as the guys head out on a long leg. I want to make sure that I do them justice on the distance accomplishments whenever it's possible. I'll do my best and rely on occasional pings from the Garmin GPS transmitter, and the Appalachian Trail Distance Calculator to come up with an estimate. So far, they've covered 70 miles and are within striking distance of a first milestone crossing the GA/NC state line!
Southern hospitality has bestowed some trail magic on them, and now we wait for the woods to decide what to call the young one ....
Ready to Walk to Maine
Here's a clip from the guys before the cold weather came! They are just getting out in the woods, testing out all of the gear, and on the lookout for some trail magic ...
Time for Some Video
Hey everyone, this is Joe posting here. I am a volunteer with a media pass, sitting in the press box helping with the documentation of this adventure ... There have been some zero day rendezvous at the cabin in Georgia, so the guys have been able to post a few things to Twitter, Instagram, and this site, but things are about to stretch out and I will be passing along content as often as possible.
Some of you might find the process of getting the video to me interesting. It is pretty straightforward these days, especially if you overlook the capability of having enough bandwidth that allows video to be uploaded from the trail to a cloud storage service like Dropbox. We chuckle when we think about paying a developer to write us a video upload application back in the days when we were soliciting user-generated video for Baseballisms! If only.
From Dropbox I load it up to the YouTube channel Walking with CoolPapaC before embedding it into the blog.
So without further delay, here's what happened one early morning ....
A few images of the trek from Jarrard gap to Tray Mountain
Much of the hike was in inclement weather forcing soggy and cold dudes to keep moving in order to stay warm. Also, the elements made for limited vid or photo opportunities. Here are a few shots I like, captured when Mother Nature allowed.
